“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.”
If words are the most powerful drug, then Valentine’s Day is THE holiday that knocks us out.
Sure, Christmas is the biggest holiday and Halloween and Easter top the list for candy sales.
But you’d be hard-pressed to find another holiday that features words more prominently in its traditions than Valentine’s Day.
Words are at the Heart of Many Valentine's Day Traditions
The traditions we associate with February 14th are FILLED with words!
1. Boxes of chocolates emblazoned with “Be Mine”
3. Classroom exchanges of Valentine’s Day cards in grade schools far and wide…
(I wonder if kids today still make mailboxes for their classmates to top cards into?!)
4. And who can forget Sweetheart candies? These sweet, heart-shaped candies are familiar to anyone who grew up in the late 1970’s and 1980’s in America.
Made by Necco (which it turns out, stands for the New England Confectionery Company. Who knew?!), these “conversation hearts” are best known for their printed messages like “TRUE LOVE” and “SWEETIE” and these days, even include “TXT ME” and “TWEET ME”.
Sadly, there will be no Sweethearts in 2019…but hopefully, they’ll resume next year.
5. Saying those precious three little words: Give me chocolate or as it’s also know, I love you… 😉

As important as words are to the holiday, there’s an abundance of truly wonderful quotes that are appropriate for Valentine’s Day.
It’s no wonder!
The word “love” has inspired countless poets, musicians and pretty much anyone with a heartbeat. Add a few other words–forever, sweetness, mine–in the same sentence with love and you’re bound to have memorable sayings.

25 Quotes for the Sweetest Holiday
When gathering quotes for any occasion, I always use the same criteria:
- Check a resource I trust (BrainyQuote is always one of my first stops)
- Search for quotes by well-known people
- Avoid quotes by controversial figures…not because they didn’t have interesting things to say, but rather because the controversy surrounding them as a personality tends to distract from the quote itself.
- Broken Heart
